This deserves half a star for sheer bravura. No other movie can claim to have its lead actress' crotch as a marketing tool.
Probably the best suspense filled drama/thriller I've seen. The story is superb and is very clever how it all comes together at the end. Even though Sharon Stone is dirty whore now, she is really hot in this.
This is a good movie
It is a story of murder, mystery, sex and romance with a surprise ending

Nice script and good acting....
Thriller and suspense never end in this movie.
Sharon Stone played a brilliant psycho killer, top class acting and performance!
The 90's was a decade that was blessed with many great movies, yet there are none greater than that of Basic Instinct. It is a truly great film. With Michael Douglas and Sharon Stone heading a wonderful cast, this was one of the great thriller movies I can remember watching. It had everything a movie could want, a bit of mystery, sex, intrigue and murder. There will need to be a pretty good movie to replace this classic from the top as one of the greatest all-time thrillers.
Nick Curran is a disgraced San Francisco police detective who helps investigate the murder of a prominent city official. Curran has a history of alcoholism and drug abuse although he is clean now. Catherine Tramell, the chief suspect, a spoiled rich girl with a background in psychology is toying with Curran's mind. When Curran is taken off the case, he enters into a dangerous relationship with Tramell, which could have bad implications. Soon everyone Curran comes into contact with turns into a suspect.
Undoubtedly, this movie is most famous for it's high level sex scenes that it contains. While I did enjoy them, they are overrated just a fraction. I must admit Sharon Stone has an incredible body and she certainly knows all the moves. These scenes also turned Michael Douglas into a sex manic of sorts and partially ruined his first marriage to Diandra Luker. Yet they create quite a mood for this film and are the main reason why it was the success it was.
The cast was great in this too. Michael Douglas is a Hollywood legend and this film only made him even more popular. His role as a the down and out cop was great. Douglas has some great films to his credit. These include Romancing the Stone, Fatal Attraction (not to similar to Basic Instinct), A Perfect Murder, and of recent Traffic (alongside his second wife Catherine Zeta Jones) and Don't say a word. Then what do you say about Sharon Stone? Before this film she was virtually an unknown, then she stormed on to our screens, without letting audiences take a breathe. Her film credits include The quick and the dead, Total Recall and The Specialist.
Other cast members include Jeanne Tripplehorn, who played Curran's ex-wife and Psychologist Dr Elizabeth Garner. Her role made me feel very anxious to realise what was going to happen. The sex scene involving her was a little hard to take. Then you have the good guy of the film, Gus, played by George Dzundza, but the way we see him go is also too much to handle. One other actress I did recognise, was Leilani Saralle, who played one of Catherine Tramell's gay lover's, Roxy.
Basic Instinct had a very good director, that being Paul Verhoven. He made this film extremely well and any other director might have got it wrong. He has made some other good films including Robo Cop, Starship Troopers and Total Recall. He did do one big flop, that being Showgirls. He commented on that film by saying `I think it was bad too'. I am sorry Paul, but you were right. Basic Intinct's script was pretty good in how it left you dangling. It was like you were in a big game of cat and mouse. I can understand that some people might not like it for that reason, but I thought it was good. The movie also had a great musical score attached to it, giving the movie a chilling feel to it.
So, all in all Basic Instinct is a film that I will always remember. It was so controversial that where I come from, I remember people needed to show there ID to get into the local cinemas, because of its sexual and violent content. I don't blame the cinemas for doing so, because it is not suitable for young eyes to see. If you want to watch a great thriller, then sit down and watch Basic Instinct. Trust me its ?nice'!
not bad but it isnt as cool as alota people think....i truly beleave people love this movie just for the open leg thongless shot and not much els but i guess its a decent thiller and shows how some men are upsest with certin women but i still dont know... was she the killer or not god damnit!!!!
Controversial when it was first released due to the infamous Sharon Stone interrogation scene. Still a very good thriller.
Michael Douglas plays a cop who is drawn to the prime suspect in a murder case, in which the victim was killed via lacerations from an ice-pice. Douglas' Detective Nick Curran cannot resist Catherine Trammell's (Sharon Stone) seductive demeanour and he soon finds himself caught up in a web of danger and others begin to die (including a colleague Nick had recently had a disagreement with). Another element to the story is that the murders seem to mirror those depicted in Travelle's novels (we find out she's a novelist.) Basic Instinct is serviceable and a fairly snappy thriller directed by Verhoeven but a lot of the characters are boring, that being said Dlouglas tries hard and Stone is suitably slithery. The denouement is fairly exciting as the audience was lead of on an inevitable red herring before the identity of the murderer becomes known. The iconic ice-pick really does not make much of an impact, the sex features throughout is fairly lurid and in-your-face but it doesn't raise this anywhere above mediocre territory, one could come to probably expect more from Verhoeven.
When I first saw this movie, of course the teenager thinks it's nothing but a raunchy movie. Revisiting it as an adult, it is still sexy! But now the thrilling performances are added to it! And the music is just perfect!!
wow amazing story
gr8 film
stone's chracter clearly shows how much can u really hate a woman like her...perfect how she plays off michael douglas..
hats off sharon
Rented this one for the nostalgia factor. Sadly, I liked the movie less after we re watched it. This movie was so dull I fell asleep before the infamous 'interrogation scene', which is only 27 minutes in!!
Basic Instinct can be seen as an older, more popular Showgirls. Softcore porn that you don't watch for the plot. It amazes me that Sharon Stone actually had a career after this film.
Awesome thriller, with so much suspense and edge of your seat excitement. Basic Instinct is erotically awesome with cool classy charisma. Loved this movie and the music score.
If you want to see Sharon Stone naked, this is your movie. Other than Michael Douglas' fine performance or Sharon Stone's tits, there is nothing else of note in this otherwise bland thriller. If you're interested in the eroticism, just cut out the middle man and go rent some porn.
Paul Verhoeven is no stranger to controversy, with Robocop labelled ultra-violent and Showgirls ultra-sleazy. Basic Instinct manages to combine the best of both worlds, with the saving grace of a tense plot and great acting.
Nick Curran (Michael Douglas) is a hard-bitten detective with a past. He killed a couple of tourists once while high on coke and the memory lingers on, as does his relationship with his police shrink (Jeanne Tripplehorn). When a rock star is murdered in the throes of orgasm with an ice-pick, by an unknown partner - an attention-grabbing opening sequence if ever there was one - Curran is called in to investigate. His hard exterior proves fragile when he meets the prime suspect, author Catherine Tramell (Sharon Stone on fantastic form as the femme fatale) and finds himself bewitched by her charms, which she doesn't hide under a bushel or, indeed, underwear.
People in Catherine's life have a nasty habit of giving up breathing. To make matters worse, the mode of their passing tends to be violent and mirrored in her novels - her latest is about a cop who "falls for the wrong girl". Is Catherine a ruthless psychotic killer, or merely a bad girl who taints everything she touches? Curran's character is equally complex, seemingly contrite about his past in one scene and displaying a worrying propensity for sexual violence in the next.
Much was made at the time of the film's release about the fact that Catherine is bisexual, openly flaunting her relationship with Roxy (a very sultry Leilani Sarelle) at the same time as she pursues Nick in the name of book research. The US gay community claimed Verhoeven's film reinforced stereotypes, while he said her bisexuality was not an issue, an argument which proves compelling as you watch the film. Little, if any, mention is made of the fact and it really doesn't bother anyone, except Roxy, who begins to have murderous thoughts herself.
The word "Hitchcockian" is bandied about so much these days that it has almost ceased to carry any weight, but Verhoeven is definitely attempting to emulate The Master here, and is frequently successful. Many of the aerial shots of San Francisco are resonant of his work, and some of Stone's costumes were based on those of Kim Novak in Vertigo. But Hitch never had it so seedy. Verhoeven drags us into the boudoir at every possible opportunity, and while the issue of whether Ms Stone really shows her all when she crosses her legs in the infamous interrogation scene is likely to be cleared up by the presence of perfect freeze-frame, it is the practical date-rape of Tripplehorn which is more likely to offend.
Basic Instinct goes beyond gritty into grime, without being a better movie for it. While some of the sexual content is necessary, much is not and comes across as voyeuristic pap, perfect for teenage boys of any age. The snappy dialogue and high-calibre acting, both by the central characters and a strong supporting cast, featuring the ever-watchable George Dzundza as Gus, Curran's more stable sidekick, keeps the film from tipping over the brink into Showgirls territory.
Ultimately, it is an engaging and interesting thriller which bucks against the easy storylines so often trotted out by Hollywood and has lost little of its impact in the 10 years since it was made.
Sharon Stone as a young, tight, perky, psychosexual killer. Absolutly perfect tits. Jeanne Tripplehorn rape scene was pretty hot too. Basically soft core porn. Makes you remember why everybody thought Sharon Stone was such a big deal back then. Brillantly overacted on her part. But so hot. So hot.
Hot and sexy doesn't begin to describe this movie. Sharon Stone does an excellent job of playing the femme fatale and put her on the map.
Quite the opening scene. The whole movie is quite a step in a new direction, and I can't get over the ending. I also don't fully understand it, either. Good film.
Another movie that proves my point that Michael Douglas does amazing sex scenes. The storyline was kinda corny, but the acting from all Douglas, Stone, and Tripplehorn kept me wondering what was going to happen next. Sharon Stone held my attention from beginning to end, and I will keep her name on my mind when I am rummaging through the video racks. I wonder if she plays hardcore women in any others. I'll take suggestions. Jeanne Tripplehorn, I didn't recognize at first, but for those of you that have HBO, she is one of the three wives on Big Love, a show about polygamy. Michael, I wish that you made more movies like this, over and over again. I've noticed that they have made a second one to this, but I believe that would be a disappointment for me to rent. I'll stick with the original.
great movie, Verhoeven does not disappoint with great tension and pretty good acting and a great unique idea make this a cool movie
This movie is just so damn sexy that it gets stars for that alone! The sexiest movie I have seen. The buildup between Douglas and Stone erupts into the most erotic sex scene in movie history (in my opinion). Oh, and the story...well, that's ok too ;-) Keeps you guessing, which most movies today forget is an important element to thrillers/suspenses.
This wasn't a bad thriller at all. Ok the sexual side of it overrides everything else - but that doesn't make this a bad film.
