MCT:September 28, 2008I was expecting more from this movie. Jack Black's character and in fact the whole movie seems tailor made for Black but somehow it doesn't deliver....

MCT:September 28, 2008Maybe it was because I was really looking forward to this movie, but I was really disappointed by it. Aside from the plot being far less clever than advertised, it was also far less funny than advertised. While both Jack Black and Mos Def are pretty hit or miss, they both missed the mark in this one, simultaneously delivering one of their most annoying characters, respectively. The faux films that they create are all pretty amusing and quite clever, which make's this movie worth watching maybe once. The supporting cast wasn't bad either, but there wasn't anywhere near enough of it. The soundtrack was okay as well, but as a whole, this movie fails to deliver.

Visionary director Michel Gondry takes a potentially hilarious premise and really lets it go to waste in this quirky comedy. The moments of comedy are quite clever, but the various takes on popular movies could have handled so much better. The two leads are fun and it's nice to see Danny Glover again, but when the DVD special features are more entertaining than the feature, you know you just watched something less than memorable. Such a shame really.

Such a fun and upbeat movie. I laughed pretty much nonstop through the first 2/3. Things got a little sappy in the final reels, but Gondry's heart was in the right place. Inventive, goofy, ultimately heartwarming. It's like a slapstick 'Cinema Paradiso' for the video-store generation, reared on Reitman and Ratner rather than De Sica and Fellini. Hey, that's me! I can totally relate. I loved this.

This was a very strange type of spoof really. It's about a group of friends working in an old VCR rental store and how one day a disaster caused them to change into movie makers.
The whole spoofing was quite well done and there were funny parts, however the pace of the film was quite slow in places making it slightly tedious.
Overall it's an average 3 star movie, plus extra half a star for a great message that you've got to believe in yourself and miracles will happen, so long as you put tonnes of effort into getting your dreams to come true. -

I was surprised how much I liked this movie. Sure, the plot makes no sense and there are times when Mos Def seems to be playing a retard, but the overall feeling of the movie got to me. At the end of the day, it's about the beauty of movies and that's what I loved about it. And I don't know if I am still on a Tropic Thunder high, but Jack Black gives another hilarious performance. And it was nice to see Farrow out and about in the world. (She looks good for her age....Woody....what were you thinking?)

That was really funny! You should see them while they are remaking "Rush hour 2" or " The lion king"!!! It's an entertaining movie and I recommend it to the fans of comedy genre.

Funny and entertaining. Not as many laugh out loud moments as I expected but was a great entertaining flick with heart and imagination.
I am becoming a bigger fan of Michael Gondry with every film he makes....he puts in the effort we don't see all that often in Hollywood these days. -

Better than I was expecting, and more Gondry-ish than it was advertised. Anyone who knows me knows that I'm not a big fan of gratuitous pop culture referencing in films, but I didn't mind it here because it felt more like a love letter to the movies that people our age grew up with. Certainly not a great film, but an entertaining one.

This was pretty good for entertainment, but it really wasn't what I was expecting. I thought it would be more about the movies they were making and less about the community, but I was pleasantly surprised. It was nice to see Jack Black in another tame role.
