My Review:
It's simple, it's enjoyable, it's sweet, and it's romantic. This is the short way to describe Before Sunrise. Well, to be honest, it's one of the best romantic-drama I ever see. Well, the story about a man who met an unknown girl, I've seen something like this before, Elizabeth Town, but this Before Sunrise it lot lot better than it.
Actually,it's the first Richard Linklater's movie I watch, but from this movie, I know what kind of director he is. He's a smart one. Ethan Hawke and Julie Delpy, both of them played well and they have their own chemistry, making them one of the best couple in 90's.
The script is extremely simple but good. Well, it's lack of score, but fortunately it didn't make this movie dusty or dull. One thing extraordinary, it's cinematography. I heard that the shoot was using a handheld camera, and they use it brilliantly. You know what's the best things of the movie? It's dialog. The dialog make this movie alive.
Well, that's all. All those romantic event happened before sunrise.
Best Things:
All conversation between Jesse and Celine.
Best Dialogs:
Jesse: And I think that's so true, I mean, all-- everything is so finite. But don't you think that that's what, makes our time, at specific moments, so important?
Celine: Yeah, I know. It's the same for us, tonight, though. After tomorrow morning, we're probably never going to see each other again, right?
Celine: We, maybe we should try something different. I mean, it's no so bad if tonight is our only night, right? People always exchange phone numbers, addresses, they end up writing once, calling each other once or twice...
Jesse: Right. Fizzles out. Yeah, I mean, I don't want that. I hate that.
Celine: I hate that too, y'know.
Jesse: Why do you think everybody thinks relationships are supposed to last forever anyway?
Celine: Yeah, why. It's stupid."You know what's the worst thing about somebody breaking up with you? It's when you remember how little you thought about the people you broke up with and you realize that is how little they're thinking of you. You know, you'd like to think you're both in all this pain but they're just like "Hey, I'm glad you're gone". "

Linklater's structure of Slacker applied to a more mainstream movie. I didn't think there could be a subversive romance genre but here it is. The sequel is just as good, part 3 in 10 years time.
Sorry... But I'm not even going to bother watching this. Saw the second one first by mistake and could only endure about half of it.
What a particular experience, I saw Before Sunset 4 YEARS BEFORE Before Sunrise... Now I love both of them. Everything makes more sense now, definitely a must see for those interested in movies about relationships, communication, etc. A very special "brief-encounter" kind of movie...
a masterpiece far different form the average lame romance films.
Before sunrise explores the connection between two strangers as their relationship develops through the night.
i cant pin anything on the film, the screenplay is brilliant, the direction is almost perfect...i love the shots of the city at night....and the acting was flawless.
defiantly one of the best romantic films out there.
THis show that a simple story can create a moving picture. What makes the film so powerfull is the realistic dialogues, after all thats what young people talk about. Not only display a love story, the film show different social perceptins in a serious but playfull kinda way, giving the film more than just the persona of a dumb romantic movie, but acctually something real and that people can trully see themselves in it.
the never-ending pretentious/sensitive dialogue sounds so real i feel embarassed. and it gets one extra star for the RECORD STORE SCENE. after that, you'll pay more attention to every bus/train mates you meet.
One of the best romantic movies of all times. Two strangers met on a train in Europe and they spent an evening together in Vienna.
The story is awesome, some kind of ordinary but when it's with the right person transformes in something special, something that happens once in a lifetime because you have found your soul mate..
And the story is also realistic, has depth because it isn't one of those big happy endings
Love this movie,my all-time favourite
Great dialogue, acting, cinematography and most of all, sense of reality. It's easy to fall in love with this movie because it's almost breathing. Touching in a genuine way, that I don't think anyone can deny.
Before Sunrise is very natural and relaxed, so it's a delight to watch and I highly recommend it.
i will never be cured of my crush on Ethan Hawke.. there's a lot to love about this movie but nothing more than Julie Delpy.. her acting gives this flick life!
The most terribly romantic movie I've seen since Once. It's the first time in a long time that a movie brought lots of tears to my eyes. Seems like it would make a good first date movie (or maybe I'm way out of touch with first dates).
I watched the first 15 minutes and I saw NO HOPE of this getting good, despite all the good reviews, but if anyone wants to force feed it to me, i will cooperate.
PAN AND SCAN. Logra lo que se propone, aunque su patrón dramático se vuelve (¿inevitablemente?) repetitivo. Es muy, muy romántica, y plasma bien la atmósfera cosmopolita de la época. / Accomplishes what it wants, though its dramatic pattern becomes (inevitably?) repetitive. It's very, very romantic, and captures well the cosmopolitan atmosphere of those times.

A young man and woman meet on a train in Europe, and wind up spending one romantic evening together in Vienna. Unfortunately, both know that this will probably be their only night together.
Every once in a while I come across a film that everyone else has seen except for me and Before Sunrise and Sunset are films which I haven't got around to seeing. Luckily today I sat and watched this wonderful poignent film and I have to admit that it totally blew me away. I remeber my Film Studies Lecturer raving about how great this film is. At the time I couldn't see it but after watching it I can see why.
Before Sunrise is a film miles away from your conventinal American Romance where you most likely end up feeling grossed out or annoyed that your watching the most irritating actor or actress in Hollywood. Before Sunrise does not do that. You feel like your witnessing a relationship between two strangers which could happen anywhere, at any time. Almost makes you feel happier about life in that sense. I know, from reading reviews about this film, that it changed a lot of people's life, when it came out in 1995 and I can see why. Before Sunrise, makes you feel confident about life and sets you out on a journey which you probably didn't realise you were on.
The characters are developed wonderfully. Ethan Hawke, plays a typical American, who doesn not speak any other language other than English-which is often touched upon in the film. You can releate to him well. Julie Deply, who I haven't seen much of, brilliantly depicts her character well and again, like Jesse(Hawke) you can relate to her very well. Both leads have excellent chemistry on screen and this is filmed well. The key to this though is the brilliant screenplay, which beautifully uses each line well to show the ever-changing relationship between the two strangers. Each conversation they have so brilliantly written and evident in life, which add to the realism of the film. I would quote something from the film but there are way too many quotes from this film, I wouldn't be doing it justice. All I cansay is that when you sit and watch this this relationship you are watching is real, which is down to the realistc dialogue written.
The direction is simply brilliant. From the shots on the train to the scenery around Vienna, we get a sense of the one night that these two characters oare on and the world in which they find themselves in. Key to this is the fact the camera-95% of the time remains on them. Every bit of Scenery around Vienna for example, is depicted as part of their world-that being just the two of them. From long shots of the lush river through Vienna to the sunset in the morning, as a viewer you feel transported to this world and in some ways, feel like them, that you don't want this night to end either.
Before Sunrise is probably wone of the most romantic, realistc films that I've seen and one of the best films of the 1990's. With the clever obervations on life and the depiction of a one night relationship, it's the sort of film that remind you why you like films. The only thing released recently that could resemble this is Lost in Translation, other than that there hasn't been a film like this for a long time and it's a crying shame.
Before Sunrise is a masterpiece and one Romantic film that you'll never forget. One of the best romatic films I've seen in a long while.
I love Julie Delpy. and I love Richard Linklater even more. Definitely one of the best romantic movie ever. Highly recommended!
Excellent indie film that has everything you should expect from the genre and more. The most stunning thing about this film is how natural everything is. The two lead characters, played by Ethan Hawke and Julie Delpy are both really fascinating and throughout the film they reveal more about themselves to each other and to us. It has taken a while for me to really accept that Ethan Hawke can act, after a few less than average performances. However, this film proves that he really does have it in him. Anything I see him in from now on, i'll be expecting this level of excellence. Up until now I've never really been aware of Julie Delpy but in this she proves to be a more than capable actress. Together they make a perfect duo, with all the chemistry and awkwardness of a couple that just met. Some really amazing and honest moments captured, make the film what it is. There are also quite a few shots showing off the backdrop which just adds to the beauty of the film. Really amazing film that I highly recommend. It's not a conventional romance film.
Cliched romantic story shot in an uncliched manner, Linklater's Before Sunrise is a very beautiful film.
most romantic movie i've seen (yet)..ilm romantis emang ga melulu perlu adegan mengharu-biru yg mendayu-dayu, pick up lines yang kelewat gombal, atau aksi oh-so-romantic yang bahkan terasa berlebihan. well, film ini buktinya!! Simple, yet touching..sepaket ditonton bareng sekuelnya: Before Sunset!
One of the most disgustingly romantic movies ever made. I think the only reason I can tolerate it is because of a somewhat similar evening I once had ...
Incredibly great! What I like about this movie is that the characters have wit to exchange incredible story with each other. It is lovely and a grand literary piece of work.
The outline of a perfect, veritable affair!True affection & craving are obvious! The audience becomes discreet witness of one of the most believable couples on the big screen! In just a few hours they were bound in a way, just like having been together for a life-time!The longwinded dialogue ,between those two young people, was a 2hour investment! You must watch the second half too!(before sunset)!
Well everyone knows how a summer romance does feel like, right? Well I do, that's why I love this movie
Couldn't really imagine falling in love with these characters. Wouldn't mind spending a night talking with them, but watching a movie of them spending a night talking is another story. I wouldn't wish a movie about me and my friends spending a night talking upon my worst enemy. Still, points for taking a risk and for having heart.
the conversation in this movie between the two characters is just amazing. the way they connect & are so comfortable with each other is the core of the movie. the vienna backdrop just adds to the charm. ethan hawkes acting is really good. i'm so eager to see 'beore sunset' now. i hope its just as good!!
Natural is the word. Everything goes easy because they were so relaxed with each other, i created a new respect for Ethan Hawk from it and got to know Julie Delpy that is not only a great actress but also a great musician! I listened to her cd and the lyrics are fucking great, i think everyone who like this film should check it out..
I've recommended this to almost every film-buff-friend I know. Engaging movie. It's amazing how much better a simple film with a great script and a couple of very, very good actors with on-screen chemistry can be compared to those multi-million $$ blockbuster movies. Personally, I could relate to the film's plot, and that's one more reason why I liked it even more. Another thing that's great about this small film? The sequel is just as good!
