Beautifully shot story of a Bangladeshi woman sent to London to marry an educated, overweight, under acheiver. Bubbles along nicely but somehow not quite satisfying enough. Gorgeous shots of Nazneen's childhood home make it worth a look on a rainy afternoon.
As to be expected this is a beautiful yet painful portrayal of a young girl who has to leave "home" for a new life in Britain. Marriage, betrayal, lust and friendship, her struggle to adapt to a harsh un-welcoming life in the run-down suburbs of London... many many miles away from the happy life she remembers from her small rural village...
Plot: The story of a beautiful young Bangladeshi woman, Nazneen, who arrives in 1980s London, leaving behind her beloved sister and home, for an arranged marriage and a new life. Trapped within the four walls of her flat in East London, and in a loveless marriage with the middle aged Chanu, she fears her soul is quietly dying. Her sister Hasina, meanwhile, continues to live a carefree life back in Bangladesh, stumbling from one adventure to the next. Nazneen struggles to accept her own lifestyle, and keeps her head down in spite of life's blows, but she soon discovers that life cannot be avoided--and is forced to confront it the day that the hotheaded young Karim comes knocking at her door.
Coming from East London, and having shopped in Brick Lane many times, i should have some interest, but the story would be lost on me, id just spend all the time going "ooh, look theres xxxxxx"
Excellent movie... A very smart and subtle love statement and definitely a new perspective on relationships...love that is gathers in time, drop by drop, is the one that matters! You fall in love and you don't even know it...and even more important, one should never be sorry! Great lesson for life! Enjoy it
a love story; one woman's journey in search for a love, a life and a truth she has never known.... an awesome plot, the movie may not have been as good as the book, which I wouldn't know anyways since I haven't read anyways... but still... :)
the end was a little disappointing, I would've actually wanted it to end with more of a hollywood ending :-P
I have read the book before and judging this to that, i will say that the book is far superior than this film. I thought that a lot of the middle chunk here was fluff, like the beliefs of the female lead, on not wanting to go back, her love for her daughters, her want for them never to be like her sister, her fear of facing her sister, has become weaker here, it is well-adapted, just not entirely well-played i guess.
muslim family trying to make it in london, husband deciding its time to go back to own country, but wife and daughter, really want to stay put, a controling husband doesent help situation, as wife, unable to bring feelings out, while social events in london, and sept 11, dont exactly help matters, a nice little kitchin sink drama, that mike lee would do much better, but good performances all round makes it a enjoyable watch,
Didn't read the book, so I saw this one on the strength of the trailer. The film chronicles a Bangla woman's relationship with her family, her native land and the eponymous East End District. Desire and duty clash as Nazneen (played by the tantalizing Tannishtha Chatterjee!) finds love - and ultimately her own power - outside of the confines of her arranged marriage. A strong cast masters the art of nuance at key points for maximum dramatic effect. Also, Nazneen's hubby (Satish Kaushik), a character I expected to despise, turns out to be refreshingly complex, exhibiting and eliciting considerable emotional range. A perfectly poignant piece of cinema, thoroughly recommended.
this film four prodution/adaptation from a novel was very compelling!!i got to view this film 2nite and was impressed with this anglo-asian story.the pages have been brought alive and really give you the feeling of living as a community within a community.it shows struggle in urban life that is true and if we looked closely we would see such things in our busy everyday lives.alongside a story of love, lust, desire and deceit that once discovered actions happen!!!part english and partly subtitled this film is very gripping and emotional!!!you may not like the idea of watching such topics in a movie yet i say free your mind give this film a go i think you will pleasantly surprised!!!
