Good acting especially from Colin Farrell and a decent story, not great Woody Allen but a good entertaining film.

Woody doesn't bring anything new to the table, but this film was just as pleasurable to watch as his previous ones. Not to mention the bloody charming British accent and the good looks of the leading men. Way to go, Woody.

i thought this movie was very intriguing. tom wilkinson was the perfect highroller uncle yet selfish. even though i dont really like ewan mccgregor or colin farrell they had excellent performances. to me it seemed like that colin's character would be the one without a heart and ewan's the one who did care about hte murder. but i was obviously wrong. in the end i thought that it should have been ewan's character who accidently killed colin instead of hte way that it was. otherwise the ending was great. this movie depicts how one thing can change your life forever.

As I'm sure you know if you read any of my reviews (or know me at all), Woody Allen is one of my very favorite writer/directors. This is possibly the darkest and bleakest of his dark and bleak films. It's being compared to Match Point and Crimes and Misdemeanors, but even those felt more hopeful because they conveyed a sense of meaning. Here, the setup is created to do the same thing, but the whole thing ends up just feeling like a melodramatic tragedy, where all the bad things happen for apparently no reason. The meaning and reason is in this movie, but it's unraveled a bit too early, and by the time the end rolls around, the earlier thoughts are forgotten. The last half of this movie feels like it's missing a scene, although I'm not sure what that scene would consist of. However, great acting from McGregor and Farrell, and the dialogue is brilliant, as is the case with all Allen's films. If you're a fan of his, check this one out (if only for the rare fact that the two leads are both males and there's little to no important romantic plot points). But if you just want to see one of his dark films, I suggest the aforementioned Crimes and Misdemeanors, then follow it up with Match Point.

These last Allen movies (I'm thinking of Match Point, for instance) are no longer comedies. He's improving his suspense abilities. With his usual irony and close look to the paradoxes of life he makes a slow paced film in which you should enjoy the character's reflections on the ways they can choose.

Something is off with this movie; its lead actors are flat, the story's not well-developed and you're not sure whether to see it as a serious movie or there's some weird Woody Allen element I'm not picking up on. The supporting cast, specifically the boys' mother and Colin Farrel's girlfriend put in much better performances. For me it's definitely not up to the calibre of his "across the pond" oeuvre.

It's a typical Woody Allen movie that involves death, money and betrayal but it is also kinda different because this film is one of the few Woody Allen's films that the leading roles are supported by men and not by women. The story about the tale of two brothers with serious financial woes. When a third party, their uncle, proposes to commit a crime is interesting yet slow and at some moments tiresome. It has some good drama and suspense, some involuntary comedy and an unexpected ending. The movie haves a good cast, Ewan McGregor and Collin Farrell both with very good performances and Tom Wilkinson with a good supporting role. This is not the best Woody Allen movie, but definitely fulfills with the expectations.

Writer-director Woody Allen is in his 70s, making film after film (sometimes twice a year; late summer brings the much-buzzed-about VICKY CRISTINA BARCELONA). This middle-of-the-road effort is the master nebish's latest from London: a crime melodrama about upper-middle-class working stiff brothers (Ewan McGregor as the calm, cool one and Colin Farrell as the gambling addict basket-case). They're in debt up to their ears and find an opportunity when a well-off uncle (Tom Wilkinson, great as always) asks them for a favor - kill a blackmailing business associate (Phil Daniels). As Farrell and McGregor get in over their respective heads, Allen gets deeper and deeper into CRIMES AND MISDEMEANORS and MATCH POINT territory (echoes, never reaching those heights). This film resembles Sidney Lumet's BEFORE THE DEVIL KNOWS YOU'RE DEAD, recalling yet never quite achieving that film's grand guignol/Greek tragic proportions in the end. The film is slow and not too dark (nor too witty), with an abrupt and realistic ending that's missing a shot or two (an auteur's choice if ever there was). Good Allen fare.

Another incredible Woodie Allen thriller. McGregor-Farrel is a captivating couple! good choice. Philip Glass soundtrack seems never changes.. unoriginal.

I like to watch movies that I can't guess which way the plot is going. I had no idea in this one. Colin and Ewan were both great. Amazing how far Ewan's character went form the opening to the end. Not what I'd consider a feel-good story. But I did find it very entertaining.

I read some pretty bad reviews of this movie, some even saying it's Allen's worst in the last few years, but I totally disagree. I thought this was an engaging, smart, and meditative story with some good acting (even by Colin Farrell). Recommended to fans of Allen's serious films

Woody Allen had a chance to convince me his movies could have some merit. Enough..this movie could be fast forwarded and nearly hold my interest. Sorry Woody!

Very slow movie, though Woody Allen's movies are generally not fast moving. Ending was pretty ordinary also (although by the time the end came we were just happy it was finally over so maybe it was fitting). One to avoid!!

Interesting little "crime and punishment" themed little movie that starts going down when it becomes too self-conscious. Anyway, good cast (specially Tom Wilkinson). Even Colin Farrell looks like an actor. Sometimes.

After watching 'Before the devil knows your dead', you couldn't stop to compare the two films. Lumets film became a masterpiece and this a let down.

Woody Allen has lost his touch. The movie drags on and although there's good actors in it, there really isn't any heart in it. The actors doesn't do that good of a job either. Farrell is the only actor that gives his character a soul.

The ending was the only real positive thing here. All in all, it remains as a minimalistic portrayal of tragic family loyalty.

A steady, captivating movie. There is no dizzying action, explotions, or dazzling special effects, but the movie manages to be one of the best I've watched recently.

The characters are introduced well, as are their lives and patterns. They grow thorough the movie - especially the brothers Terry (Farrell) and Ian (McGregor). In the beginning the first is a gambling man living on his luck, while the latter dreams big but it keeping his feet safely on the ground.

When the game gets tough, though, it is almost surprising who is going to grow a conscience, and who will bury their fellow men for their dreams.

Drama, love between brothers and family, and dreams close to coming true mingle in this film. Blood is thicker than water, they say; family is everything, they say here. 'How far; how long; how deep?', I ask.

I loved the ending, especially. After all the drama and hard (impossible) decisions, it all comes down into such basic things. Our big struggles in life are such a small thing in the eyes of the world.

This is the second time I've watched a Woody Allen movie, and guess what? He still sucks!

It's interesting to see Colin Farrell play against type, and both he and McGregor do their best, but they can only do so much to overcome Allen's bad writing and direction. These actors deserve better.

Boy was I surprised to learn that this was a Woody Allen film, and disappointed. It was interesting to see Ewan and Colin 'switch' their stereotypical roles of good/bad guy respectively, but it was not enough to excite me. It was very slow at parts and sped up in others. I got up more than once to wander about the house. NOT recommended

I hoped this movie would be as good as Match Point, but failed on almost every aspect of it. The script was bad and the end (which I hoped 'till the last minute would blow my mind) was pushed and rushed. The acting was good, the surprise was Colin Farrell who shines in this film and has pushed himself off of my list of bad actors :P

I had such a big obsession with Colin Farrell I have a teddy bear named after him! LOL

But there is just something about Ewan McGreggor that is really attractive! He is lovely and does so much for everyone.

I think that they are both two of the best actors and best looking guys EVER!

If you ask me I would rather keep both of them! LOL

I am Ewan's BIGGEST fan, no I am not obsessed like everyone else, I just think that he is a really good person, he tries to help children around the world, and he is a really great father to his own children, yeah he is a great actor, and he is really good looking, but there are other things besides ewan being hot that makes him attractive.
