Plot: Bruges (pronounced "broozh"), the most well-preserved medieval city in the whole of Belgium, is a welcoming destination for travelers from all over the world. But for hit men Ray (Colin Farrell) and K...( read more read more... )en (Brendan Gleeson), it could be their final destination; a difficult job has resulted in the pair being ordered right before Christmas by their London boss Harry (two-time Academy Award nominee Ralph Fiennes) to go and cool their heels in the storybook Flemish city for a couple of weeks. Very much out of place amidst the gothic architecture, canals, and cobbled streets, the two hit men fill their days living the lives of tourists. Ray, still haunted by the bloodshed in London, hates the place, while Ken, even as he keeps a fatherly eye on Ray's often profanely funny exploits, finds his mind and soul being expanded by the beauty and serenity of the city. But, the longer they stay waiting for Harry's call, the more surreal their experience becomes, as they find themselves in weird encounters with locals, tourists, violent medieval art, a dwarf American actor shooting a European art film, Dutch prostitutes, and a potential romance for Ray in the form of Chloë, who may have some dark secrets of her own. And, when the call from Harry does finally come, Ken and Ray's vacation becomes a life-and-death struggle of darkly comic proportions and surprisingly emotional consequences.

For some reason I expected a heavily influenced Guy Ritchie ripoff (though maybe not so harsh on the ripoff,) but boy was I in for a turnaround.

It's billed, I guess, as a bit of a comedy; however, it doesn't always turn out that way. Instead, we're treated to a lot of introspection, of course a little sight seeing too, a guided tour of sorts, by our hosts the two hitmen. Then, unexpectedly, we find out what happened to trigger these events, and where it's left Ray (Colin Ferrell,) emotionally, and spiritually. It becomes a snapshot of the man's struggles, and a reflection of who he is and who he wants to be. In the midst of all this personal turmoil, is obviously, the killing.

Don't get me wrong, it's not a blood bath film, or a very violent one. It's just a good movie about two guys who find themselves in an awkward situation, oh yeah, in Bruges; or, as Ray would say it, in F***ing Bruges.

The best gangster in fairytale land movie I've ever seen. Seriously funny in a dark way. I'd only rec this movie to friends who are twisted and enjoy fouled mouth characters.

Really enjoyed this dark comedy :) Some scenes kind of leave you thinkin 'wtf was that all about?' but lots of fun regardless and good to see Colin Farrell using his Irish accent for a change :)

Random, not funny, and nothing like the trailer may lead you to think. I had it on in the background and let it run to the end but i was on here typing this at the same time so not exatly an attention holder. maybe guys will like this one. The end picks up but i wouldn't watch it again. I think if you like the sytle at the start, lock stock or even rocknrolla then you might like this.

    Excellent movie...
It's rare to find a film that can go from hilarious comedy to dark violence and genuine emotion without compromising either the humour or the drama but this one does it time and again.
The cast are excellent, Gleeson is good as the sensible adult figure while Farrell is brilliant as the comic and immature lead. Farrell shows excellent comic timing and gets most of the best lines. The supporting cast are all good, everyone is believable.
The humour is often very politically incorrect but never in a nasty way, the dialogue is superb and there are some great set pieces and unexpected comic twists to catch you by surprise and make you laugh out loud.
The dramatic side handles a very dark and emotional subject very deftly with believable switches from humour to sadness and the leads really earn there money by pulling those switches off seamlessly.
There is a lot of action and violence especially towards the end and this throws in ideas that I had never seen used before.
    I really like this move.

Much better than I expected it to be. It's one of the better movies I have seen this year and a movie I enjoyed very much. All three of the main actors gave very good performances and I enjoyed all 3 of them. Very entertaining film with a lot of laughs. Highly recommended.

This is easily the best film of 2008. It is the feature film debut from Martin McDonagh, who gave us fantasic plays like "The Pillowman" and "The Lonesome West." He, personally, is my favorite playwright. He finds such a unique way to mix dark humor with complete tragedy. In Bruges delivers that brilliantly.

The movie is about two hitmen named Ray and Ken, played by Colin Farrell and Brendan Gleeson, who are sent to Bruges, Belgium to lay low and wait for furthere instructions from their boss Harry, played by Ralph Fiennes. There, they encounter various sight-seeing marvels, a racist dwarf, and a Belgian coke dealer for film crews. Later, you find out they were actually sent there by Harry so that Ken can kill Ray because he botched a hit that happened a few days ago.

The performances in this are all brilliant. Colin Farrell finally picks the right role for himself. If only he could do more films like this one. It seemed so natural and effortless. Fiennes is also fantastic as the stick to your principles boss. He isn't afraid to call you "an inanimate fucking object" if you know what I mean.

But, the real show-stopper is Brendan Gleeson. He plays the very funny, sympathetic guy that everyone loves. He seems to be the only one that cares for Ray and that looks after him. Gleeson and Farrell play two of the most fun and interesting hitmen since Jackson and Travolta (Jules and Vincent) in Tarantino's Pulp Fiction.

The script, as always from McDonagh, is pure brilliance. I hope that the next thing we see from him is the film version of "The Pillowman," my favorite play.

This film is a lot of fun and I recommend it greatly. It definitely deserves several Oscar nods. I hope that the Academy remembers it even though it came out early in the year.

Definitely one of the best in its class. Great action, great drama, and, above all, great comedy. I haven't laughed this much at a movie in a while.

I think it was an okay movie but, the whole bit about eating each other was not something I wanted to see... I mean if it truly came down to that or die... I would starve to death.

A novice hitman (Colin Farrell) botches his first job, with tragic results. He is sent to hideout in Bruges with his mentor (Brendan Gleeson) until the dust settles, but their boss soon decides that getting rid of him would be the best option for everyone.
I didn't expect much from this but I really enjoyed it. It's a black comedy, in a beautiful setting, with drugs, guns, midgets and some of the funniest one-liners I've heard in ages.
It is also very sad, touching and completely un-PC. Both actors are excellent in both the funny and the poignant moments. As someone who is not a fan of Farrell, I was really impressed with him in this - must be going soft in my old age!
I really recommend this to anyone who isn't likely to be offended by massive amounts of swearing, midgets on ketamine and jokes about fat Americans. :o)

dark moody and offbeat. the best thing farrell has done and gleeson was excellent. expected more laughs and it was contrived in parts - fight in restaurant, midget bit, etc. But overall, clever and well scripted. worth a look. oh, and i do like bruges, so it ws like seeing an old friend...

I really liked this movie, but I did not like the very end. It left me very frustrated. I can see how the ending is good and all, but it still frustrated me. Throughout the rest of the film I love the humor and the relationships between the characters. I believe Colin Farrell and Brendan Gleeson both do very well in it. I particularly loved Colin's performance.

This was a really good movie. It had comedy while managing to be mostly not funny. That's not a bad thing, although it sounds like it. Colin Farrell did a great job.

I wasn't expecting it to be as funny as it was. It worked well with my sense-of-humor. Collin surprised me in this, I was expecting a horrible performance cause of late he hasn't been doing well. For the most part it's a good dramedy. Though for a person like myself (short attention span) it's very difficult to keep your attention all the way through.

Wicked, cool but also charming comedy with a good amount of black humour and funny dialogues (must admit I love irish accent ;) It got it's cheesy moments especially towards the end, but they were bearable for me as it doesn't get too predictable (mostly). Definitely worth a watch.

Funny, snappy, well made. Gets a bit silly toward the end, but still manages to hold itself together. Good stuff.

A friendof mine & myself last night decided to go see a film, with no plans in mind of what to see.
After both quashing each others first couple choices, we agreed on this, since neither of us had any idea what it was about, but both said "Colin Farrell, cant be that bad".

What it was, was the BEST movie I have seen in a longtime that I had no expectations about. Funny as hell. Serious at the same time. It had midgets (uhh, dwarves), hookers, conmen/conwomen, hitmen, and so much more. It was random froms tart to end, but tied the whole package together well at the end. Comedic genius.
I cant figure out who the people are that have this down to only 3.5 stars, but they clearly are too politically correct to find ANYTHING funny, and thus hated this, because it does manage to poke fun at probably every race imaginable. But you still laugh when you heaqr it, because the delivery was great.
