Y'know what? Just read the novel. It's waay better... Casting Kaneshiro as Zhuge Liang is absurd. Sorta like casting Justin Timberlake as Napoleon

As a prequel, this movie did its job, setting out the background and allowing the audience to grow familiar with the characters. However as John Woo flick, I did expect more budget, some scenes clearly were done by CGI and looked incredibly fake. The war scenes though, were done very well with expected amount of blood, gore plus good action scenes. Since this is just the first movie of 2 parts in which the actual 'fun' would start, I expect more for the 2nd part

Great casual entertainment with 'epic' written all over it. I cant wait for the sequel. The only major problem is the fight in the large trap. As exhilarating as it is, it carries on for too long compared to the rest of the film. The presentation is not consistent with the rest of the film.

I can't help but really enjoying these epic Asian movies. I really think this is John Woo's best since he came to the US (and eventually left). Tony Leung and Takeshi Kaneshiro are two of my favorite Asian actors right now and they really do a great job. The character development in this part is really fantastic. I didn't know this had a sequel so the ending was rather abrupt, but now I can't wait to see the next part. Sure, the CGI might look a bit clunky at times, but a great score, performances and cinematography make up for it. Welcome back, Mr. Woo.

Absolutely fantastic. As far as epic movies go this is as good as it gets. Very character driven, the action scenes are exhausting and the acting is top class. Thankfully the plot's not too complicated to follow, as John Woo's direction guides you along nicely. Can't wait for part two.

Solid and entertaining first part though the film suffers from a few cheesy moments. Nonetheless, a good setup for an epic second half.

After seeing this movie's cover, I definitely think that it will be great so I watched. Same as my thought, it was very good. All the characters are outstanding. The effects are amazing like sailing thousands of warships, flying lots of arrows in the air.

The story is the war between the two china ancient nations. I was very impressed about the fighting strategy. It's so amazing. Even though they can't match with the enemies, they have the strongest spirits.

But the thing I can't bear is it may be continued. We will wait for the second part. We have to wait.

While most movies of this period would focus on the great Liu Bei, this story focuses on his generals and his allies' generals. One truly cannot understand the sheer power and awesomeness of Guan Yu until one sees this film in my opinion.

I loved the way they focused on the character's development, really did build up the base of this film. The slashing scenes where blood flew everywhere, wasn't done very well as blood, really isn't that red. There was a great improvement in C.G but still, not good enough compared to hollywood's. Overall, its a very good film, am pretty excited for the upcoming sequel.

a cool (if slightly inaccurate) rendition of a classic -- 8088 black & white computer game. A pity it ends on such a "cliff"-hanger though.

Seems like a mimick of LOTR but the cinematography is rather outdated. The computer effects look fake too. There were some humourous moments, but the ending was too abrupt. The characters were well developed though and their charming persona were well portrayed. It makes me want to read the literature to learn more about the characters.

    Welcome back, Director Woo.
This one is not quite exciting but still has sparks here and there. Sparks form the action as well as sparks created merely from the silent looks exchanging between the guys.
After this, you'll look forward to the conclusive Part Two.

Very engaging in the way this story is told. We are introduced to all the wonderful characters of Three Kingdom through a talented director in John Woo. Kudos to giving this film such character and charm. Great actors and a beautiful actress in Lin Chiling. She has to be, for what else could be a better motivation to Cao Cao's unquenchable desires. But it was Takeshi who gets the best role as the reknown Zhuge Liang. Now I didn't know that the master strategist and advisor to Liu Bei has such keen sense of wit and humour. And I didn't know the battle was only half fought thus teasing us with the anticipation of Part 2 six months later.

Tony Leung is always great, you just can't find any weakness in his performance....
Takeshi Kaneshiro is good too, just....his character in the movie is kinda...."girly"
So, is John Woo doing his directing job well??? Yes ofcourse, the set piece of Eight Triagrams Formation(Bagua)is choreography very well, non-stop massive war battle and fight....John Woo deserved the credit!!!
But, regarding to the story telling technique, John Woo is definitely not as good as Zhang Yi Mou....which is why, after I watch Red Cliff, I feelike there is something lost or missed in the movie....
Red Cliff is a big challenge to him, this is not a story of triad and cop....
John Woo tried so hard, and we can see that he tried his best, just...it was really hard to reach a balance between story and action....
But anyway, Red Cliff is easy to digest, I am lookin towards the Part 2....

A movie based on China history with many philosophies and thinkings.

Zhu Ge Liang is a calm strategist, Takeshi Kaneshiro plays it just right.

Cao Cao was well portrayed by Zang Feng Yi, my long-awaited talent after Farewell My Concubine.

Tony Leung Chiu Wai plays smart planner Zhou Yu.

To my surprise, Hu Jun can do action movie as good as his melodramas.

Zhao Wei's role is like her classic Huan Zhu Ge Ge, cunning + funny + active!

Zhang Zheng and Shido Nakamura are always professional actors. Congrats!

I respect the movie because it only make reference to martial arts from Ang Lee and Zhang Yimou. The movie never have a scene counterfeiting the predecessors.

I love this movie very much. Hopefully it will be nominated for or win worldwide awards.
