Plot: A paranoid thriller about a family on the run from a natural crisis that presents a large-scale threat to humanity.
well done shyamalan!!!! round of applause...i cant believe this man keeps getting funded to make such terrible movies...will no-one ever learn? and i like the guy ,the sixth sense is one of my fav movies, signs ws pretty good too an then it just all seems to hav gone downhill...this time i thought maybe ,just maybe hes got back to what he was good at to start with! but no i was wrong,so very very wrong!
so disapointing!
A bit more depth would have helped the plot which seemed stretched out. Not one of Shyamalan's best efforts still better than many others in the genre.
This is the kind of movie I really get into. M. Night Shyamalan is a brilliant film maker and never disappoints. This is a good movie for people to get out of the "real realm" and get your mind set for a good sci-fi time. Not for everyone, as I've read a lot of reviews. It's definatey worth renting, even if you're unsure about it.
Avoid like the plague at all costs! I didn't know whether or not it was a spoof or not because Mark Whalberg is so bad in it!! I would have rated it higher had he died in the film.
Saw this on the plane. It was OK. Concept was different, but another pretty mediocre movie for Shyamalan
It was better than the last one he did. I enjoyed it. He keeps trying to make powerful statements with his movies. I think if he made making a great film his top priority we, as movie fans would pick up on subtle messages through out the movie. He doesn't need to slap us across the face with them.
Shymalan has substituted drool-inducing political messages and plot transparency for his usual M.O. of plot twists and obscuring paranoia. Blech. Marky Mark is a terrible actor, too. Only watch this movie if you happen to enjoy getting lost in Zooey Deschanel's eyes as much as I do.
Not that good...
When I first saw the trailer for 'The Happening', I was quite excited at the prospect of another film by M. Night Shyamalan. After all, I enjoyed all his previous films, save 'Lady in the Lake', and was sure he would deliver another breath-taking blockbuster. Sadly, I was wrong and while the film was not a turkey, it was not of the excellence I had expected.
The film sees some sort of mysterious ecological event leading to people committing mass suicide, the phenomenon spreading first from large cities then to smaller towns until it is clear a huge chunk of the East Coast is affected. At first, it is assumed to be a terrorist attack but, as more and more people are spontaneously kill themselves, it is clear the cause may be something else entirely...
This time, though Shyamalan humbles his vanity ? you don't see him on screen. He now should swallow his pride and leave the writing to the writers. Armed with a better script, we can still expect Shyamalan to make his future movies worth waiting for. For now it is only the memory of the opening sequence, which can be proclaimed as mind-numbing greatness, which is really worth taking away from this movie.
Poor timing in the horror, unintentionally funny in places, extremely boring premise and script, and Zooey was great.
it was pertty much a "meh" flick m night is no filmmaker... but this i gotta say it was better then his last films....he still hasnt redeemed himself for making such horrid shit....but this one....good cast....decent plot some thing a bit diffrent.... its worth a watch
Well it was not what I had expected from Shayamalan. A huge disappointment. i think he's losing it a bit!!
lievä pettymys hienojen shyalamanin leffojen joukossa.. elokuva ei tarjonnut jännittävää juonta, eikä juonenkäänteitä. myöskin, en tiedä, mutta tuntui, että näytteijätyö kaipasi beroccaa!
AMAZING STORY LINE.... I LIKE THIS KINDA CREEPY SENSELESS MOVIE....IF URE A LUNATIC U SHUD HOOK IT UP....LOL
Could of been so good but just went on this stupid tangent of dumbness...if that makes any sense!!! Marky Mark's worst performance yet!
Quiet a good story, good at the beginning, however it looks like a made for TV movie, Mark Wahlberg was not good as the main character.
The Happening is anther great flick by M. Night Syamalan, which is about time, cos The Lady of Water wasn't that great....this is a pretty decent "horror about plants" thingy, the scenes about people killing themselves are disturbing for me....
... good potential im sad to admit i felt, but terrible execution... i mean the mic was even in the scene in that one part... the mic... ... really???
M. Night's worst movie ever....i was soo dissapointed...i was hoping he would come back with another good one.....he has potential he just does not know how to use it.
THIS MOVIE IS FREAKIN WIERD ALL THE BODIES FALLING DOWN FROM THE BUILDING MAN THAT WAS CREEPY BUT THE MOVIE REALLY DIDNT MAKE THAT MUCH SENSE.....BUT OVER ALL IT WAS OK
M. Night Shyamalan himself called this "a fun B-movie", and he hit it right on the head....
I enjoyed the movie....as I do with all his movies....
So what is it?! A lot of exasperated people probably asked that. I've heard moviegoers mumbled their frustration, short of asking for a refund, because "The Sixth Sense guy" was supposed to scare their daylights out. Nobody warned them this is not that kind of movie. That the last scary movie this guy made was indeed The Sixth Sense. Not all films are about ghosts. And anyone who has seen Shyamalan's work knows he didn't go Hollywood to sign up for a Friday the 13th-like nthlogy.
What is admirable about M.Night is that every movie he makes is unlike any other he has done. He's a fantasy director. He takes you for a ride of surprises, if you allow him to.
He's a storyteller. Not the best one maybe, considering the circus that was Lady in the Water. But with The Happening, he's back to his restrained self (thank God). Unfortunately, that's what made the film suck for some. Nothing's happening in this movie! they say. They want the hysteria, the shock, the gore. Yet I found this film frightful enough, some scenes making the hairs in my arms stand. The middle-aged man turning the motor on that farm tractor? That scene is eerie because you know what would happen and you dread it. There are no cries of hysteria here , just a quiet submission to one's fate.
But then what is it really? M.Night answered it (or tried to) twice, if I recall. Through Mark Wahlberg's science class and through a television interview with a scientist. Nature has turned against man.
The image that will be imprinted in my mind is that of the trees and grass dancing, like it's choreographed. It's beautiful. Yet it's the kiss of death. Like an avenging lover's last kiss.
M. Night Shymalan must have been out of twisted endings, because this was like a road to freakin' nowhere...
It would've gotten as low as Meet The Spartans, if it didn't have me laughing so much. Seriously, The Happening might just be funnier than Pineapple Express.
5.4/10
What can I say. This movie sucked. Not even Mark Wahlberg, whom I rate as a great actor, could save this turkey.
I don't intend to include any spoilers, unless you include the fact that nothing of any note goes on in this picture. Equally the script seems to be written from the perspective of a naive 10 year old for a U-rated audience. The details concerning the relationship friction between the central characters seem so childlike as to be pointless.
Zooey Deschanel, who I enjoyed in Failure to Launch, seems completely miscast or just terrible. Her principle role seems to be to appear as a giant doe-eyed girl stumbling from scene to scene as though awakening from a drug-induced coma.
Shyamalan made a great first movie and I also enjoyed Unbreakable. Other than that he's been sliding into an abyss of drivel and somebody needs to stop funding his crap so I can stop kidding myself into sitting through it with the idea that surely this time it'll be worth it.

What a terrible film. I have never been so bored watching a film. AVOID THIS FILM
well i was very excited to see this movie...but after watching it ...it is surely below expectations....although this movie is abt nature giving a warning......it could have been explained better...it was just abt ok not in the league of sixth sense and the signs...
This movie has an extreamly boring storyline and doesn't make much sense. I don't know what sort of impact it was suposed to make but I was left wondering if it was suposed to be a scary movie, a drama or a comedy. I was not scared or moved at all in any part of the movie. The movie wasn't funny either with the exception of a few moments but it just seemed like a piss take. I wouldn't recomend this to anyone, unless you want to be bored to death.
As opposite as it may be to MOST people.
I loved the film! It was enjoyable aswell as disturbing. It's a strange but lovable film. It was something I've never seen before and something worth watching again!!. I loved the acting, the script, the plot whatever - I loved every bit of it. For me it was a suspenseful heart pounder and breathing teaser. By the end of it, it leaves you in deep thought (Some may not have felt this same reaction though?). Can't wait for the DVD. Mark Wahlberg is a fantastic actor. He is really diverse and is starting to really flow into drama (which I think is nice!) even though we love him in action.
Oh and I don't know if this is considered a spoiler but... What is REALLY scary about this film is WHAT YOU CAN NOT SEE. It's something alot more deeper than mare psychos with a knife or zombies eating your body. It scares you because it's ---- undefinable. "We'll fail to acknowledge that there's forces that work beyond our understanding".
It was ass...okay script...wrong direction & wrong actors who messed up their characters...it sucked
Good movie and if you didnt like it u sudnt have watched it cause it obvious its about supernatural stuff and since im the guy who belives in ufo's ghosts etc i loved the movie!
Ive had some time to process this, and by far this is Shyamalans WORST by far. I happenen to be a fan of his, but I must say....wow, what went wrong? Wahlberg is normally a strong, captivating, leading man! He plays a teacher, but he just doesnt 'capture' this character..he was miscast. And whats up with Deschanel? ALOT of close ups on her face, and not too much more...The BEST acting came from John Leguizamo, in my opinion, he should have had the lead. He would have made this an emotional movie...which I think is what Shyamalan was going for.
